I'm an extra

A couple of weeks ago I had a day off (as I work part-time in a bookstore I have loads of them) and decided to use it constructively by applying as an extra in a tv-series. Right now TV2 Norway is filming a mini series based on the The Half Brother/Halvbroren by Lars Saabye Christensen (Norwegian literary royalty) which will air in early 2013 I heard. The setting was a smokey bar in Berlin in 1990 and the main character is pitching a porn movie to a danish filmmaker. I, along with plenty of retired people and an assortment of youngsters were supposed to be the patrons of the bar and were made to mime in the background (as one guy put it "You are shadows"). At the costume try-outs I was put in some horrendously uncomfortable shoes and was glad that we were supposed to be quiet and hence had to film everything shoeless! What I learned was:
A) Respect filmmakers, they film every scene from about twenty different angles and therefore the actors need to repeat everything about fifty times!
B) When you are retired, being an extra is great! You get to sit around and knit while waiting for scene setup and you get paid for pretending to prance around in costumes...sounds like a much better way to spend your day then sitting in a retirement home solving crossword puzzles!
C) The hourly rate is crappy and you have to bring your own lunch...so if you actually have a job that pays somewhat well this is more exciting for the experience than the money!
D) How people survived the eighties dressed in polyester and taffeta is beyond me!

Attached are a scary looking picture of yours truly (it was 06:30 AM!!) and the aforementioned shoes! Quelle horrible!
